Description:
From 1949 to 1963 the former Soviet Union carried out atmospheric nuclear waves on the Semipalatinsk test site. Previous studies on the health effects of radiation were essentially based on a cohort of around 10,000 exposed people in 10 towns. However, the Kazakh Institute Niirme has a significantly larger register of around 300,000 people from the region, which is an excellent basis for a large prospective cohort study. In an international project, extensive studies on the radiation exposures of the relevant towns were carried out.
The aim of the research project is to build a cohort based on the NIIRM register. This cohort is to contain all people in selected towns and combined with the available information on radiation exposure. The Niirme cohort is to be described descriptively. Analyzes on the radiation risk should be carried out.
