In its recommendations from 2007, the International Radiation Protection Commission (ICRP) has included the protection of non-human species in its system (ICRP publication 103). Building on this, various recommendations and concepts for radiation protection of the lively environment were developed at national and international level. This development reflects a growing global commitment to environmental protection and a movement towards a holistic view of radiation protection, which expressly includes the lively environment.
The departmental research project is therefore devoted to the fundamental question of radiation protection as to whether the revitalized environment in Germany is sufficiently protected against the harmful effects of ionizing radiation if the dose limit values for the population in connection with the applicable calculation provisions to determine the radiation exposure of the population are observed.
