  • Description:
  • BASE has been participating in the “Carbon-14 and Iodine-129 Migration in Cement (CIM) experiment” in the Grimsel rock laboratory since 2020. In this, a radionuclide solution was injected into a cement body that was approximately 20 years old and surrounded by crystalline rock Radionuclides were given the opportunity to migrate through the cement body towards the surrounding crystalline rock over a period of more than three years. Once the migration phase was completed, the area around the injection well became recovery drilled over by sample material. As a project partner, BASE has sample material available for analysis. The research project planned here is intended to investigate the binding mechanisms of radionuclides in cement using in-situ samples from the CIM experiment be examined. The focus is on the long-lived anionic radionuclides I-129 and Cl-36, which are relevant for the long-term safety of a final repository for radioactive waste. The aim of the investigations is to understand the process with regard to the Migration of I-129 and Cl-36 in cement, which can be used, among other things, within the geotechnical barriers of a final repository for radioactive waste, under realistic final storage conditions. Should go beyond understanding the process Data is generated that can be used to validate computer programs to assess long-term safety. Data from in-situ experiments are particularly valuable. This is how the examination of samples from the CIM experiment can provide insights whether previous results from laboratory studies can be transferred to realistic repository conditions (large spatial and temporal scales as well as realistic environmental conditions). The knowledge gained from the project should contribute to: BASE can evaluate the statements on radionuclide mobility to be made by the project developer in the site selection process based on the state of science and technology. br...
