Description:
Soil is a non-renewable resource on human timescales. Unsustainable uses lead to erosion,
nutrient depletion and other forms of degradation. Up to ten million hectares of soil are degraded worldwide every year, and more than 24 billion tons of fertile soil are lost as a resultlost due to non-sustainable management. Consequences
are the partly irreversible destruction of (agricultural) ecosystems and a decrease in agricultural yields
because the soil loses its productivity. Land degradation increases vulnerability to the effects
of climate changes and at the same time contributes to the emission of greenhouse gases. With the special initiative "Transformation
of Agricultural and Food Systems" (formerly "Special Initiative ONE WORLD - No Hunger (SEWOH)"), the BMZ
is making a global contribution to improving the situation of the rural population in developing countriesdeveloping countries suffering from hunger
or malnutrition.
