Description:
The Lake Chad Basin is one of Africa's major watersheds and is home to around 45 million people. With extensive pasture and arable land and rich fish stocks, it is an economically and ecologically important area for the countries of Chad, Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon, ZeCentral African Republic and Libya (member countries of the Lake Chad Basin Commission). The fragile ecosystem of the Lake Chad Basin is faced with overexploitation and increasing pollution of natural resources, v. a. due to the strong population growth, under enormous pressure. Because of the prognosisDue to climate change, up to 23% of the area currently available for rain-fed agriculture in the Lake Chad basin is expected to be lost by the end of the century. There are increasing conflicts over scarce resources. There is a serious conflict going on at the momentFish canals on the Logone River between farmers, ranchers and fishermen.
The mission of the Lake Chad Commission (CBLT) is to support its member countries in the sustainable management of Lake Chad's water resources. The member countries of the Lake Chad Commission haveall have weak statehood and are also characterized by armed conflicts. The poor population, most of whom live from subsistence farming, is directly affected by the worsening water shortage caused by climate change.
