Description:
In a multi-stage project, the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft (FhG) is planning to set up a "research production battery cell" (FFB), in which the novel battery cell concepts and processes will be combined and researched with digitalized, flexible and modular manufacturing methods. Aim of the FFB is the reduction of development effort for the highly scaled production of the latest lithium-ion battery cells. In this way, the FFB is intended to significantly reduce the risk of industrial partners when transferring novel cell concepts and production technologies into large-scale production Significantly reduce the entry barriers for new manufacturers. Furthermore, the FFB facility is intended to help ensure the qualifications of specialist personnel for battery cell production in the medium and long term. The FhG was commissioned by the BMBF to plan and implement the FFB as part of the FoFeBat research project commissioned. The FFB is a Fraunhofer facility and is being set up in Muenster. The growth of the local infrastructure should take place gradually within multi-stage planning and construction phases. The first research work in the "FFB Workspace" of the Alexianer Werkstatten in Muenster. The first construction phase ("FFB PreFab") was handed over to FhG by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia at the beginning of 2023, while the move into the associated second construction phase ("FFB Fab") is planned for a later date.
