In addition to the two regional centers of Halle and Leipzig The network area includes the Saxon districts of Northern Saxony, Leipzig, partly Central Saxony (only the former Döbeln district as an MDV transition area), the Saxony-Anhalt districts of Burgenlandkreis and Saalekreis as well as the Thuringian district Altenburger Land district. In mid-December 2019, regional rail transport services were added in the districts of Anhalt-Bitterfeld and Wittenberg as well as in the independent city of Dessau-Roßlau. The MDV thus covers an area of 11,300 km² with 2.1 million inhabitants.
