- B 1, VKE D181, replacement Josef-Kardinal-Frings Bridge - geotechnical reports General The Josef-Kardinal-Frings Bridge (JKFB) is the federal highway 1 that connects the two cities of Neuss and Düsseldorf across the Rhine. To the west, the B 1 connects to the A 57 and fulfills a feeder function for regional traffic to the center of Düsseldorf and the port of Neuss. There is also a double-track tram route for local public transport between Düsseldorf and Neuss via the JKFB. The On January 1, 2024, the road construction load was handed over by the cities of Neuss and Düsseldorf to the road construction administration of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (Straßen.NRW) on behalf of the federal government. Due to the poor condition of the bridge, they have been running since 2024 Renovation work by Straßen.NRW to maintain roadworthiness until a new replacement building is planned. DEGES was commissioned in 2024 with the planning and construction of a new replacement building. A feasibility study was carried out in 2025/2026 created with the aim of determining under which conditions the replacement building can be realized and which basic variants would be considered. Scenarios regarding the route location, the bridge type and the cross section were used examined.
