The Professional association University Hospital Bergmannsheil gGmbH is one of the largest acute clinics of maximum care in the Ruhr area. In 1890 the first accident clinic founded by the miners who had an accident for care, the Bergmannsheil today combines 23 highly specialized clinics and Specialist departments under one roof. Around 2,200 employees ensure the care of around 84,000 patients per year. In 1977 the Bergmannsheil became the University Clinic of the Ruhr University Bochum, together with other clinics from the Bochum area. Initially A "Bochum model" launched as a provisional was later developed into a permanent solution. Research and teaching is also carried out as a university clinic in Bergmannsheil.
