Description:
Ammonia in the air, in addition to its role in the formation of particulate matter, also has effects on ecosystems. On the one hand, the deposition of ammonia as a nutrient is significantly responsible for nutrient enrichment in ecosystems (eutrophication) and associated biodiversity loss. On the other hand, direct effects on plants, predominantly on sensitive vegetation under higher ammonia, are documented (Sutton et al., 2009). Due to its effects on ecosystems, plants and lichens, the Geneva Air Cleaning Convention has passed critical values for ammonia, which are expected to expect negative effects. These are given with 1 μg M 3 for sensitive organism groups such as lichens and mosses and 3 μg M 3 for higher plants.
While concentrations of nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide have fallen continuously in recent decades, measurements show that the ammonia concentration is not removed in the same period or z.
