  • Description:
  • One research focus of the Mining Consequences Research and Development Center at the BGR is, among other things, the use of adapted monitoring tools for the scientific investigation of the effects of the dismantling of surface and underground mines Mining sites. In particular, hydrogeologically relevant “changes in groundwater and soil” must be systematically recorded and related to scientific questions, for example with regard to groundwater availability and the contamination of groundwater by mineralization. In the coming years, another core task of the FEZB will be the coordination and scientific support in the creation of the “Lausitz groundwater model”. There is an exact one for this Knowledge of the hydrogeological parameters and the subsoil required. To answer the above questions, a lightweight TEM (transient electromagnetics) apparatus that can be worn on the back is used. It will be on restricted access Post-mining areas (tipping sites, dumps, etc.) are used. On these often sandy and dry areas, other geoelectric methods, such as electrical resistivity tomography, can only be used to a very limited extent. In current FEZB projects It has also been shown that TEM measurements represent an ideal complement to the surface NMR capacities available at the BGR. Since the often highly mineralized groundwater in the post-mining area has a not insignificant influence on the propagation of electromagnetic fields (with regard to the spatial distribution of the NMR excitation energy), a precise characterization of these groundwaters (and their electromagnetic properties) is essential in order to make quantifiable statements using surface NMR.
