- The BfG advises and supports the WSV in recording suspended matter concentrations and loads on federal waterways. To increase efficiency and reduce costs, the continuous suspended matter measurement network is currently being modernized. The previous manual sampling on weekdays is replaced by the measurementreplaced using turbidity probes. The turbidity, which is used as a proxy for the suspended matter concentration, is, in addition to the suspended matter concentration, also significantly influenced by the grain size, which varies spatially and over time. Water samples must therefore be taken regularly to ensureCalibrate turbidity probes for recording the suspended matter concentration.
Multi-frequency ultrasound probes offer the possibility of detecting suspended solids in particle size fractions and therefore have a high potential to further increase the efficiency of the continuous suspended solids measurement network. The ultrasonic sensor must necessarily meet the following criteria:
- Measurement of the suspended matter concentration from 0 to 1000 mg/l
- Measurement of the suspended matterff concentration in at least five grain size classes between 63ym and up to 1000ym (if possible 2000ym)
- The measurements must be sufficiently accurate (/- 20%) without additional calibration of the probe in the form of water samples.
