Description:
According to the Groundwater Ordinance (GrwV 2010), the competent authority (Brandenburg State Office for the Environment - LfU) determines the areal expansion of the load if threshold values are exceeded. In groundwater bodies (GWK), according to Directive 2000/60/EC (Water Framework Directive, EU-WRRL) there may be contamination of pollutants in the groundwater (GW). Previous investigations show that in Brandenburg, groundwater bodies are classified as having poor chemical status, primarily due to diffuse pollution from nitrate and ammonium.
In some of the groundwater measuring points (GWM) of the state of Brandenburg, the nitrate levels are partially or completely reduced by denitrification. Based on this parameter, it is therefore not possible to make any statement about the actual nitrate inputs. Based on the nitrogen/argon (N2/Ar) method, the content of the excessNitrogen can be determined in order to be able to draw conclusions about the original amount of nitrate introduced. Furthermore, the sulfate content can be derived, which comes from the nitrate degradation. Using these results, it is possible to better identify sources of pollution according to the requirements of the WFDbetter plan and implement boundary and targeted management measures in groundwater bodies in poor status. This requires qualified sampling including analysis of the gases nitrogen (N2) and argon (Ar) in the groundwater.
