There is a preference for established technologies in railway data communication. The networking of the vehicles is mainly based on established components of guiding and safety technology, such as Balis and magnets, as well as standardized connecting-based mobile networks, in particular GSM-R. In addition, vehicle systems use conventional communication buses such as the WIRED Train Bus (WTB) and the modular Vehicle Bus (MVB). Future-related communication technologies, including 5-G based mobile phone, vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-eVermanding communication as well as open Busy systems offer considerable potential to modernize rail communication. However, these technologies are still facing their fully regulatory approval and standardization for the nationwide use in the security -critical environment of the rail systems.
