Today Kaufungen has around 13,000 inhabitants. In 1995, the Niederkaufungen and Oberkaufungen district fire departments were merged into the new central fire station in the center of Kaufungen. Kaufungen has been a base guard since 2009 and is therefore also responsible for regional fire protection tasks. The fire department is located at Theodor-Heuss-Straße 7.
