- The expansion of solar energy is an essential component of the energy transition. According to various studies, up to 280,000 hectares of open space could be required to achieve the legal target of 400 gigawatts of installed solar capacity by 2040. The use of open spaces by photovoltaic systems (PV-FFA) can mean opportunities but also risks for nature. The expansion of PV-FFA is currently taking place primarily on agricultural land (fields and grassland). The animal species in these habitats are often seriously endangered; for example, the populations of some open-land bird species have fallen by over 90% since 1992.
To date, there is hardly any reliable scientific knowledge about the effects of PV-FFA on various species and habitats. In addition, the results of various studies sometimes contradict each other. In recent years, due to a lack of knowledge regarding the habitat suitability of PV-FFA for species in open landscapes, a large number of monitoring reports have been created for certain species within the framework of the permit or voluntarily by the operating companies.
