Starting in 2019, Stadtwerke Muenster developed a green generation strategy for the decarbonization of pipe-bound heat and identified preferred renewable generation technologies for this. One of these generation technologies is deep geothermal energyInformation, in particular from the results of the 2D seismic survey of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia from 2021, shows a certain degree of probability and the presence of several reservoirs. In this context, the Muenster municipal utilities were encouraged to continue on the path they had chosen. About the good networking in dowing to the industry and the relative size of the company, the project can serve as a role model for other utility companies in North Rhine-Westphalia. The use of geothermal energy from the depths, or deep geothermal energy for short, represents an advanced way to generate CO2-free heat to supply customerswin. The aim of Stadtwerke Muenster is to successfully develop the "greenfield" deep geothermal energy in Muensterland. Muenster has three potential reservoirs for the use of deep geothermal energy: the Upper Cretaceous at a depth of around 1,000 m and two Paleozoic reservoirs at depths of more than 1,000 ms 4,500 m.
