The decline in the insect biomass in Germany in recent decades has been dramatic and is partly over 75 percent at individual locations. The use of synthetic pesticides in conventional agriculture is discussed as a causal factor. The latest studies also show the pesticide stress of insects in nature reserves in Germany, which are close to conventionally managed agricultural areas, even if there are nature conservation buffer zones. Persistent organic compounds in precipitation and fine dust samples are measured all year round at the UBA measurement stations. The expansion by the analysis of pesticides using organic trace substance analysis thus promises a more extensive overview of the anthropogenic influence on the atmospheric background and the deposition of transported pollutants.
