- Description:
- Klifoplan: “Reporting methane emissions from biogas plants (BioMeth)” According to previous calculations by the UBA, around 5% of the methane produced escapes uncontrollably from biogas plants. The emission sources include biogas engines (methane slip from CHP engines), open digestate storage facilities, and diffuse sources. Five percent annual methane loss corresponds to 300 kt of methane per year or 7.5 million t of CO2 equivalents; That's almost 1% of Germany's annual greenhouse gas emissions according to the Climate protection report 2022 (KSG §10). The aim of the project is to further develop the measurement methodology for recording and quantifying climate-relevant gases (GHG emissions) in non-gas-tight fermentation product/manure storage facilities by integrating additional systems into this Measuring program to validate the measurement methodology and to expand the number of systems with practical measurements. The project aims to investigate these unwanted loss flows from biogas plants and thus create a more secure database for them Greenhouse gas reporting and the assessment of energy provision from biogas plants are created. To this end, methane losses should be systematically recorded at a representative number of existing plants. This includes losses Biogas engines, digestate storage facilities and diffuse sources such as leaks and aggregates for digestate treatment, as well as other emissions from operational disruptions and maintenance work. The optimal measurement implementation must be clarified in the project.
