- Floodplains and rivers form an inseparable unit. For the floodplain ecosystem, the alternation between floods and droughts in conjunction with the fluctuation of the groundwater level in the floodplain is the central factor that shapes the communities in a decisive way. Coupled Surface water-groundwater models are potentially able to represent the complex interactions between groundwater and surface waters with sufficient accuracy. This makes forecasts regarding the effects of, for example, altar connections, further advancing bed erosion or In principle, it is also possible to raise the level of the riverbed to the flood conditions and the groundwater level in the floodplain and, in the next step, to the floodplain ecosystem. As part of the project, existing methods for predicting changes in habitats that are related to flood frequencies and durations are to be used and groundwater levels are researched, compared and evaluated. The input data required for each method and their temporal resolution must also be taken into account (e.g. flood days per year, maximum water levels above ground, permanent groundwater level curve etc.). In a further step, the practical suitability of coupled surface water-groundwater models as a basis for the forecasting methods considered in the first step must be assessed. In particular, the question that needs to be answered is whether the input data required by the forecasting methods can be delivered with sufficient accuracy. For three example areas on the Elbe (including NGP MESE), it must be assessed whether setting up a coupled model would be possible and useful and whether the data required for this exists and would be available. For data that is still missing, it must be assessed whether a survey would be possible and useful. The total time and financial effort required to build a model in the example areas must be estimated. (Preliminary) work by BfG and UBA taken into account.
