- Framework agreement on marine sand extraction for coastal protection in M-V
On the coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, permanent compensation is being used negative sediment balance and therefore considerable amounts of sand are required for the stability of coastal defense systems. Between 1990 and 2024 the Around 21 million m³ of sand was installed in dunes, beaches, chutes and dikes on the coast of M-V in the course of over 100 enrichment measures. Taking into account availability and technological feasibility, this considerable material requirement can only be guaranteed if the required sediment is produced the Baltic Sea is won.
Marine sands can only be obtained from shallow marine coastal areas in an ecologically and economically justifiable manner. In addition, an appropriate Distance from the raw material source to the installation site is a key parameter in order to be able to carry out coastal protection measures economically, in particular the implementation of nourishment to restore dunes.
The state of M-V, represented by the State Office for Agriculture and the Environment Mittlers Mecklenburg (StALU MM), currently has permission for 14 fields to extract the mineral resource sand in quantities and quality suitable for coastal protection purposes.
