• Description:
• Tunnel structures in the federal highway network consist mainly of steel and tension concrete structures, in which chloride-induced reinforcement corrosion is a major problem. Planning and construction costs are currently dominating the decision-making process in the constructive formation of the tunnel structures, while aspects of durability and the associated life cycle costs are often neglected. Damage caused by chloride -induced corrosion make up a significant share of the total damage volume and lead to high maintenance costs, traffic disabilities and shortened Use periods. This has economic and ecological consequences that urgently need a sustainable and permanent construction. The aim of the research project is to develop and evaluate strategies to improve the durability of tunnel structures in terms of chloride -induced corrosion. The focus here is on two central approaches: • Use of corrosion -resistant reinforcement in order to increase the durability of the tunneling shells against the exposure to chloride and to ensure the structural integrity of the structures in the long term. • Use of innovative Coating systems that prevent the penetration of water containing chloride and increase the lifespan of the buildings under real environmental conditions. A life cycle approach is pursued that takes into account the planning, manufacturing and usage costs and the sustainability and economy of the measures. The project is intended to provide reliable knowledge to reduce maintenance costs and to enlarge the maintenance intervals. It should contribute to the extension of life of tunnel structures and environmental impacts through less frequent repair measures minimize.
