- T610-803 GN Precise Orbit Determination for Mega Constellations in Low Earth Orbit (expro+). The activity addresses Precise Orbit Determination (POD) for Mega Constellations in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), based on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and Inter Satellite Links (ISL). Advanced POD concepts are needed for future space safety (such as collision avoidance) and should build on innovative concepts such as onboard POD for scalability and cost reduction. The activity will investigate, how advanced POD concepts have to be implemented in a distributed manner across the ground and the space segment in order to achieve these objectives. The activity builds on a previous activity "New Concepts for On-Board Precise Orbit Determination (T710-403GN)" that was successfully concluded in 2021 and has investigated Optical ISL in combination with GNSS for relative navigation in LEO. The previous activity has shown the significant potential of on-board POD. Further investigations were recommended to confirm the scope for mission operation cost reduction and higher degree of process automation. However, the challenge is not limited to POD as such, but data processing in general. Processing could in this context be on ground and disseminated to the space segment for decision making on board of the satellites. The number of satellites in particular in case of mega constellations is perceived as a bottleneck and requires an optimised distribution of processing between the ground and the space segment. Processing elements such as the covariance matrix calculation are expected to be carried out on board, other processing elements on ground. Besides accuracy, needed to steer collision avoidance, also availability and integrity are key to allow for onboard autonomy. In addition, consistency is required, thus accuracy on the level of an individual satellite is not deemed sufficient. A further challengeis to improve the numerical stability of large non-linear systems. Price Range: 200-500 KEURO.
