- Argo is the first global real-time-in-situ observation network in the history of oceanography. A fleet of around 4,000 autonomous floats throughout the world sea seams operated in Argo. The floats wear sensors to measure the temperature, salt content and in the BGC extension also bioogochemical parameters (such as oxygen, chlorophyll-a, suspended matter, downward radiation, nitrate and ph) while actively moving up and down in the water column. They offer a wide range of users an unprecedented, free and open, quality -controlled data record.
Since January 2008, the BSH has been responsible for operational operation of the German Argo contribution. In order to comply with the requirements of the international Argo program regarding the area density and comply with German obligations, new floats must be suspended each year, so that the target stock of 200 German floats will be preserved in the future. This number ensures a proper description of the condition in the sea area to be monitored by the BSH. The operational measurements in the German Argo program are to be continuously expanded to BGC Floats.
