Description:
Argo is the first global real-time in situ observing network in the history of oceanography. In Argo, a fleet of about 4000 autonomous floats operates throughout the ocean. The floats carry sensors to measure temperature, salinity and in the BGC extension also biogeochemical parameters (such as Soxygen, chlorophyll-a, suspended solids, down radiation, nitrate and pH) while actively moving up and down the water column. They offer an unprecedented, free and open, quality-controlled data set to a wide range of users.
Since January 2008, the BSH is responsible for the operational management of the German ARGO contribution. In order to meet the specifications of the international ARGO program with regard to areal density and to comply with German obligations, new floats must be released each year so that the target stock of200 German floats will be retained in the future. This number ensures an appropriate status description in the sea area to be monitored by the BSH. The operational measurements in the German Argo program are to be continuously expanded to include BGC floats.
