The city of Borna, which includes 3 towns, namely Borna, Eula with the districts of Eula, Gestewitz, Haubitz and Kesselshain and the Wyhratal with the districts of Neukirchen, Wyhra, Thraena and Zedtlitz, is located in the southern part of the Leipzig lowland bay in the natural area of the southern Lei mining areapzig. In what is now Borna's surroundings, extensive lignite deposits emerged in the Tertiary period, and their extraction in open-cast mining areas has had a lasting impact on the landscape around the city for more than 100 years. South-east of Borna is the scenic KohrenerCountry.
