IPCEI-CIS aims to strengthen the cloud and edge infrastructure in the European Union. Cloud and edge computing is becoming increasingly important for companies in Germany and Europe. In 2019, 76 percent of German companies used computational services from the cloud compared to 73 percent in 2018 and 66 percent in 2017. Especially the Covid-19 pandemic has shown how necessary a powerful cloud infrastructure for companies can be in times of crisis. But even without the digitizing thrust through the pandemic, there are many reasons for the increasing importance of cloud and edge computing. It enables companies, especially SMEs without their own powerful infrastructure, access to complex future technologies such as Big Data, the industrial Internet of things, artificial intelligence or machine learning. In order for companies and business models from Europe to stay competitive in the long term, they need access to these technologies - without giving up important rights in dealing with the data used when using it.
