- In its final report, the Commission on the Storage of Highly Radioactive Waste recommended promoting research in order to develop options such as the foreseeably time-consuming process of underground exploration in Phase III The location selection process can be shortened (final report 2017, p. 35). In 2022, the Federal Society for End Storage mbH (BGE) will have the time requirements for phases II (above ground) and III (underground) of the site selection process for the first time estimated. The time required for underground exploration in Phase III was considered for two variants, in which the exploration was carried out in one case with vertical drilling and horizontal drilling deviated in the host rock area (variant 1), in the other case with Mines (variant 2) are carried out. Assuming parallel underground exploration of two locations, BGE estimates the exploration period in Phase III to be 5 - 6 years with drilling (variant 1) and 13 - 23 years with mines (variant 2). Furthermore, the BGE states in an alternative proposal that - based on the Swiss procedure - an additional acceleration of the procedure is possible through an exploration with 2D seismics in phase II and 3D seismics only in phase III. .
