Lightweight construction is one of the game changer technologies that focus on increasing growth and competitiveness as well as securing climate protection and sustainability. Here, carbon fibers (CF) play a role as reinforcement material for thermoplasticsoutstanding reel as they offer a unique combination of low weight, high stiffness and strength combined with thermal, UV and corrosion resistance. Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) components can already be produced today that are comparable toallow a weight reduction of 30% compared to aluminum components and even more than 50% compared to steel components. However, the mass use of these fibers in markets such as aviation, automotive, wind power, construction and infrastructure is still limited today by the high price of the fibres, the petrochemical onesBase and costly manufacturing processes prevented. For these reasons, derived from the cross-generational and global challenges, the Carbon LabFactory, which is to be newly established as a research campus and branch of the TU Chemnitz in Boxberg/Oberlausitz, has set itself the goal ofresearching "green" carbon fibers.
