- According to WindSeeG, the installed capacity of offshore wind energy (OWE) is expected to increase to 70 GW by 2045; currently (December 2024) 9 GW of capacity has been installed. In order to achieve this expansion goal, on the one hand an eightfold increase in output and thus a correspondingly increased number of systems to be built and, according to current planning, also larger systems and thus larger pile diameters are required. In addition, the shipping traffic related to offshore wind farms (OWP) will increase significantly, both for the construction and maintenance of the systems. Both result in a significantly increased input of noise emissions, which can have various effects on hearing-sensitive animals, such as porpoises, ranging from hearing loss, flight or reduced physical fitness due to noise-related interruption of hunting behavior. In order to address these consequences, it is urgently necessary to develop new noise reduction measures or to bring them to the stage of application or to develop them to the state of the art.
